Valerie Ng

Valerie Ng’s abstract paintings are a gestural expression of mood and movement. Working mostly in oil on canvas or acrylic on paper, they are created through explorations of colour, light, depth, form and texture. She strives for a dynamic balance of energy and atmosphere through a unique transfer of marks in the action of painting. Inspired by the natural elements, hues, shapes and effects of the environment the works invite you to wander along to experience the sensation of colour in abstract journeys.  She took up painting in 2002 after attending the Alternative Foundation in Fine Art at The Slade Summer School, The Slade School of Fine Art, University College of London, UK. With an interest in paper and digital art, her artworks include artists’ books, papier-mache, collage and AR multimedia.

Her paintings have been exhibited at the Singapore Art Museum as well as the National Art Gallery, Malaysia. She has had solo exhibitions at Maya Gallery, the UOB Art Gallery, Substation and Mulan Gallery, as well as group exhibitions at One East Asia, instinc and Jendela Gallery at the Esplanade. In addition, her works have been in regional art fairs and auctioned by Larasati Auctioneers.

In 2018, she won the Bronze Award at the UOB Painting of the Year competition as well as First Prize (Abstract) in the 2004 UOB POY in Singapore. In 2021 and 2019, she was a finalist in the Sovereign Asian Art Prize in Hong Kong and selected for the 2006 Young Contemporaries, Malaysia.

Valerie Ng - Wild Flow Jungle
The Wild Flow series is a continuation of a rewilding theme where coloured pathways of undergrowth stream across the canvas. A process of regeneration, making connections pooling and spreading across the surface. Textured marks sprout and weave their way around, exploring multitudes through pockets of space. Contemplating on how nature can take over perhaps in unplanned ways resulting in overgrown spaces, meandering trails and cultivating hidden gardens. A mix of water-soluble oil paints in a random directed pour are left to dry in tones of colour interspersed with thicker textured marks. The fluid stains in shades while the strokes of mellow earthy hues curl across and over, ingrained in scrapes and whorls. The overall composition coming together in a natural rhythm and flow of space and movement in the elements of earth and water. Featuring 5 paintings in colour schemes of Jungle Green, Red flow of Lava, Blue Underwater flow with Coral, Greens and Orange of Flora as well as a darker haze of Smoky Black.
